    hello again

oh hello there. it’s been a while. I’ve got a little bit to say about where I’ve been and why I’m back. but for now, I just want to share two things with you.

the first is this very site you are on. I decided that if I was, indeed, going to return to this little corner, I wanted to do things a bit more intentionally. I wanted something that I would enjoy coming to every day. something that would help me tease out those bits of creativity that come few and far between in my everyday life. plus, most of you who read this are my dear friends and family spread all over the world. and if I’m going to ask you to share life with me via this strange portal, I really did want something that you would enjoy coming to everyday too! so here it is! this little corner…with a little revamp. I am forever indebted to my wonderful nashville friend, beth mathews, for her graphic design expertise. she has the best style of anyone I know (really, though. the. best.), and is likely the kindest person I’ve ever met. not once in the process, did my laughable lack of ability to make a decision phase her – at least not visibly so. I am just continually impressed by what that girl can do. (I even borrowed the design at the top of this post from her.) so take a look around, friends! explore a bit and let me know what you think. and if you want to come along with me in this little corner or any of the others I occupy, click on those fun yellow icons to your left.

    …which brings me to…

the second thing I have for you. well, for one of you. since moving to nashville (almost a year ago!), I’ve been soaking up the details of a city that sort of feels like the southern equivalent to my all-time favorite city. and surprise of all surprises – I kind of love it. who knew?! so in honor of my new home and in a small, celebratory act to “launch” this little corner, I’m doing a nashville necessities GIVEAWAY featuring some of my favorite nashville finds so far. get excited!

    1. crema coffee – I must admit, I haven’t found anything as good as my favorite portland roasts. but crema comes pretty darn close. their drink menu keeps things straightforward and simple (which I love), but they do have one or two seasonal drinks that are absolutely killer. lately, it’s a latte made with ginger and molasses. like drinking bits of heaven, I tell you.

    2. olive and sinclair – the designer-jeans of chocolate. you may, at first, gawk at the price tag of these locally-made, small batch bars. but then you taste that rich, dark chocolate goodness and realize. worth. every. penny.

    3. blood:water mission – this one’s kind of a no brainer. you will hear lots and lots about blood:water eventually, but for now, that this coffee (or tea) mug is awesome. I’m giving away one of them here. you should go buy a few more here.

    4. wildsam field guides – this may seem like a nashville-specific travel guide since it technically is a nashville-specific travel guide. but I promise you, no matter where you live or what your future travel plans entail (COME VISIT ME!), you will love this book. it may be about nashville, but the care these writers have taken to recognize the uniqueness of their city may just inspire you to love your own even more. and on a selfish note, I’m just hoping whoever wins this will read it and immediately want to come visit me.

    5. a thrift store surprise!  this city is a pure gold mine of antiques and second-hand treasures. a veritable mecca of all things vintage and dusty and full of character. based on who actually wins this thing, I’ll be picking out something perfect for you.

so that’s what you could win. I think you will agree that it’s totally worth doing just one of the following:

    1. sign up to receive email updates from the ordinary instant in the sidebar to your left (“follow by email”). I’ll know that you signed up, so you don’t have to leave another comment telling me you did so.

    2. leave a comment! I have a few topics up my sleeve, but I would love to know if there is something you would like to see me regularly writing about. or you can even just say hello and tell me you were here! a blog seems daunting and scary when I don’t know who’s reading it. if you leave me a comment it becomes more of a conversation than some random words falling into the internet abyss.

want TWO chances to enter? do both of the options above and I’ll throw your name into the running twice!

the GIVEAWAY is open to everyone (even those of you in germany or italy…you know who you are!) and I’ll be running it all this week – until Friday, May 24, at midnight (CST), at which point I will randomly choose the winner and contact you for shipping details.

I’ll also be posting every day this week, so be sure to check back on the daily. (hint: on wednesday, I have another little something to give away.)

thanks for coming back, friends. thanks for continuing to be my family, all over the world, through this little corner I have claimed.

Carrie — Giveaway or no giveaway, I am so delighted to see you revamping your corner of the web. You’re inspiring me to do the same. One thing I loved (and miss) about your previous blogging was simply the photos you posted — I love knowing the people, things, or places, that you decide to want to capture in an image, and to hear the reason that you thought them worth holding onto.
Love you! And I DEFINITELY want to visit you!

Carrie, when I come to Nashville, will you take me to some of your favorite places? I am hitting the road June 20, stopping off at Lake Charles, LA to take some of Steve’s stuff to him and then up to MO for July 4th. I am planning then to go to Cincinnati and Nashville is just a short distance away. So what are your plans for July….I’m looking at around July 19th! Miss you and your banter …….Steph

      • carriehorton says:

Steph, you KNOW I would love it if you came to Nashville! I will be in CA the week before, but should be back in Nashville by then. This works out perfectly, because I would have been so bummed to miss you when I’m in town earlier in the month. Just let me know when you’re going to be here!

Beth Mathews, you are undoubtedly my hero. I don’t know what I would do without you…not just in my blogging life…even more in my everyday life :)

    6. Whoa, what a fabulous giveaway! I signed up to get your email updates. :-)

    7. And another comment to get me 2 entries! I’d love to hear more about places you go and things you eat in Nashville. That city fascinates me. It’s easy to photograph your food (and then repost the Instagram photos!). Also, I loved it when you did the “what’s in my bag” post about a year and a half ago. Always fun. :-)

      • carriehorton says:

Becca! Thanks for signing up to get email updates…and for all the suggestions! There is so much good food in Nashville and I’ll try my best to capture all of it…but it might just mean you have to come visit someday :)

I can’t wait to read all of your posts, but something about your heart for missions would be delightful! Also, even if I don’t win can I go thrift shopping with you? :)

      • carriehorton says:

Stacey! That topic is definitely on my list, but it feels so daunting to try to put into words. Thanks for the encouragement to do so! And YES! Let’s go thrift shopping…I will buy all the things your clutter-free self doesn’t want to buy :)

    10. Jena says:

Carrie! So glad to see you writing again! I don’t have any brilliant ideas for topics yet, but if anything comes up I’ll let you know. Miss you friend!

Jena! Thanks friend! I miss you – you know ideas are always welcome. I really need to come back to Portland so I can get inspired by all my wonderful friends :)
